The Department of Human Assistance administers various federal, state, and local government programs designed to provide temporary cash aid, food assistance, and health insurance for eligible low-income Sacramento County residents.

Medi-CAL health insurance
Medical Care Services Program (MCSP)
CalWORKS / TANF
Housing Choice Voucher Program
General Relief / Assistance

General Assistance is a county funded temporary cash assistance program for unemployed single adults and couples who may not have dependent children and are not receiving other public assistance benefits including, Supplemental Security income (SSI) or unemployment benefits. Recipients not disabled must seek employment, and are required to repay county funds.
CalFresh (Formerly named Food Stamps)

The CalFresh Program is designed to supplement the food budget of low-income households to meet their nutritional needs. individuals granted CalFresh benefits can buy food at a grocery store or other authorized places using an electron Benefit transfer (EBT) card. The amount of CalFresh benefits a family receives is based on household size, family income and resources.
CalWORKs – Cash Assistance Program

The CalWORKS program is designed to assist families toward a path of work and self-sufficiency. The purpose of the cash assistance program is to provide temporary financial assistance to economically disadvantaged families with dependent children. Benefits are based on household size, family income and resources.

Cash Assistance Program for Immigrants (CAPI)
Cash Assistance Program for Immigrants (CAPI) is a state-funded cash assistance program for certain aged, blind and disabled immigrants. DHA is the lead county in the North State/Orange CAPI Consortium. DHA staff processes applications and maintains continuing cases for Orange County and 24 Northern California counties.

1. Make an appointment - Always attempt to make an appointment. Oftentimes this will save you hours waiting in lines. When on the phone make sure you ask for the documentation needed in order to receive assistance.

2. Do not be late for your appointment - This tip should speak for itself.

3. Dress appropriately - If you want to be treated with respect, dress as appropriately as possible. We are not saying wear a suit. Just make sure you and your clothes are clean and non offensive. We have found that clients who dress in this manner have a better chance of receiving aid.

4. Bring all pre determined documentation - Bring all of the documents you were advised to bring from your appointment phone call. Without them, you will not receive aid.
