Full Description:

Southwest Georgia Community Action Council is the private, non-profit community action agency in Southwest Georgia that provides social services funded through the Community Services Block Grant (CSBG) in 14 counties, Head Start/Early Head Start child development services funded through the Department of Health & Human Services (DHHS) in 18 counties, and home weatherization services funded through Georgia Environmental Finance Authority (GEFA) in 16 counties.

The Agency also provides numerous other community services funded through a variety of funding sources including public and private grants, donations, and fund-raisers.

All services support the mission of the Agency and are targeted at helping low-income families improve their level of self-sufficiency.

The mission of the Heart of Georgia Community Action Council, Inc., and the Middle Georgia Community Action Agency, Inc., is to provide, in collaboration with public and private partners, social services that address the needs of disadvantaged individuals.

Assistance Services Include:
Head Start, employability services, emergency assistance, transportation, home weatherization, Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP), and case management.

The Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP) is a Federally-funded program that helps low-income households with their home energy bills.

LIHEAP can help you stay warm in the winter and cool in the summer. By doing so, you can reduce the risk of health and safety problems (such as illness, fire, or eviction).

The federal government does not provide energy assistance directly to the public. Instead, LIHEAP operates in the 50 States, the District of Columbia, Indian tribes or tribal organizations, and the U.S. territories.

*NOTE: The availability of LIHEAP assistance is not guaranteed. Often most of the Federal LIHEAP funds are spent during the winter.

Tips For Prompt And Professional Assistance
1. Make an appointment - Always attempt to make an appointment. Oftentimes this will save you hours waiting in lines. When on the phone make sure you ask for the documentation needed in order to receive assistance.

2. Do not be late for your appointment - This tip should speak for itself.

3. Dress appropriately - If you want to be treated with respect, dress as appropriately as possible. We are not saying wear a suit. Just make sure you and your clothes are clean and non offensive. We have found that clients who dress in this manner have a better chance of receiving aid.

4. Bring all pre determined documentation - Bring all of the documents you were advised to bring from your appointment phone call. Without them, you will not receive aid.
