Utility and Rent Assistance. Must appear in person.

The Department of Social Services offers a wide range of services in two locations.

The Raddock Building at 1801 Sixth Avenue, Troy provides financial assistance such as Temporary Assistance, Food Stamps, Medicaid and the Home Energy Assistance Program (HEAP). This building also houses the Adult Protective unit and the Child Support Enforcement and Collection unit.

The Administration Building at 127 Bloomingrove Drive, Troy provides an array of casework services including Child Protective, Foster Care and Adoption services.  The Accounting Unit and HomeCare unit are at this location as well.

TEMPORARY ASSISTANCE
Cash benefits, Medical Assistance and Food Stamps are available to applicants whose income is insufficient to meet their needs.

FOOD STAMPS
Individuals and families not eligible for Public Assistance can apply separately for Food Stamps. It is not necessary to schedule an appointment. Applications are taken from 9:00 a.m. to noon and 1:00 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. The Food Stamp Benefit Card can be used at all local supermarkets.

MEDICAID
It is also possible to apply for Medical Assistance only. Individuals who have income above the temporary assistance standards may be eligible for Medical Assistance. Medicaid provides financial assistance for medical bills and placement of elderly and disabled in nursing homes.

Tips For Prompt And Professional Assistance
1. Make an appointment - Always attempt to make an appointment. Oftentimes this will save you hours waiting in lines. When on the phone make sure you ask for the documentation needed in order to receive assistance.

2. Do not be late for your appointment - This tip should speak for itself.

3. Dress appropriately - If you want to be treated with respect, dress as appropriately as possible. We are not saying wear a suit. Just make sure you and your clothes are clean and non offensive. We have found that clients who dress in this manner have a better chance of receiving aid.

4. Bring all pre determined documentation - Bring all of the documents you were advised to bring from your appointment phone call. Without them, you will not receive aid.
