Financial Help Provided: General Relief Assistance, Cash Assistance

Full Description:

The General Assistance (GA) program is designed to provide assistance to indigent adults who are not supported by their own mean, other public funds, or assistance programs. The GA program is mandated by state law. GA is county funded and is established by the Board of Supervisors.

The county pays GA Clients directly with a single warrant once required documents are submitted.

Persons who are unable to work are required to provide a doctor's statement of disability attesting to their physical or mental condition. Persons providing such a statement are referred to the Social Security Administration to apply for disability benefits. The individual signs an agreement that the county will recoup the amount of General Assistance paid on their behalf from their retroactive SSI/SSP benefit payments.

General assistance may be available for cremation and/or burial of cremated remains of indigents that are residents of Madera County based on General Assistance eligibility requirements.

Tips For Prompt And Professional Assistance
1. Make an appointment - Always attempt to make an appointment. Oftentimes this will save you hours waiting in lines. When on the phone make sure you ask for the documentation needed in order to receive assistance.

2. Do not be late for your appointment - This tip should speak for itself.

3. Dress appropriately - If you want to be treated with respect, dress as appropriately as possible. We are not saying wear a suit. Just make sure you and your clothes are clean and non offensive. We have found that clients who dress in this manner have a better chance of receiving aid.

4. Bring all pre determined documentation - Bring all of the documents you were advised to bring from your appointment phone call. Without them, you will not receive aid.
