The Burke County Department of Social Services is dedicated to assist individuals who require or request our applicable social work services to maintain or enhance the quality of their lives. We strive to provide those services within the context of community needs, the law, and state defined policy. We further seek to provide those services in a manner that respects the dignity of each human being and recognizes the need for each individual to reach his/her highest level of independence.

 

PLEASE NOTE:  If you need to report abuse or neglect during normal business hours, Monday-Friday 8:00 am-5:00 pm, call (828) 764-9600 and ask to speak to a children's protective services intake worker.  After 5:00 pm or on the weekend, call the Burke County Sheriff's Department at (828) 438-5500 and ask to speak to the Burke County Department of Social Services on-call social worker.

 

The NC Division of Social Services is responsible for various programs and services. The main services we are interested in providing to you is the Work First Cash Assistance Program:
Emergency Financial Assistance
Families who are experiencing a financial emergency may be eligible for financial help to pay for housing and utilities.
Families that meet the following criteria may be eligible for Emergency Assistance:
The family must have a child who lives with a relative as defined for Work First Family Assistance and who meets the age limit for Work First cash assistance.
Total income must be at or below 200% of poverty level.
Family's statement is acceptable for citizenship and identity unless it is questionable. If in doubt, request appropriate verification.
Counties may set requirements that are more restrictive than these, but not requirements that are more lenient.

Tips For Prompt And Professional Assistance
1. Make an appointment - Always attempt to make an appointment. Oftentimes this will save you hours waiting in lines. When on the phone make sure you ask for the documentation needed in order to receive assistance.

2. Do not be late for your appointment - This tip should speak for itself.

3. Dress appropriately - If you want to be treated with respect, dress as appropriately as possible. We are not saying wear a suit. Just make sure you and your clothes are clean and non offensive. We have found that clients who dress in this manner have a better chance of receiving aid.

4. Bring all pre determined documentation - Bring all of the documents you were advised to bring from your appointment phone call. Without them, you will not receive aid.
