Full Description: The Department of Social Services administers federal, state, and local public assistance and social work service programs.
Financial and social services assistance included: Fuel and Energy Assistance (Heating, Cooling and Crisis), Medical Assistance (Medicaid), Virginia Initiative for Employment not Welfare.
Other financial assistance includes:
General Relief: The General Relief Program is an optional local program designed to provide assistance, either maintenance or emergency, which cannot be provided through other means. The General Relief Program is financed through state and local funding. Components of a local GR Program may include assistance for medical or dental services, burial expenses, assistance for unattached children and interim assistance. The local General Relief Program is developed by the local department of social services to meet the identified needs of each jurisdiction. The General Relief Program is financed through state funds (62.5 percent) authorized by the General Assembly and local funds (37.5 percent) authorized by the governing bodies. Over and above these amounts, agencies may use 100 percent local-only funds to meet additional needs. Each agency determines the criteria for the use of local-only funds.

Virginia Medical Assitance Programs:
There are several Medical Assistance Programs offered in Virginia. Each program covers different groups of people and each program has different eligibility requirements. When you apply for Medical Assistance, you are screened for all possible programs based on your age, income, financial resources, and other information. To be eligible for a Medical Assistance Program, you must meet the financial and non-financial eligibility conditions for that program.
The TANF program provides eligible families with a monthly cash payment to meet their basic needs. For a child to be eligible he must be:
Under age 18, or if 18, will graduate from high school before age 19
Going to school regularly if he is between the ages of five and 18
Living with a parent or other relative
