Financial Help Provided: food, rent, utilities, and medicine assistance.

Full Description:

Provides food, rent, utilities, and medicine assistance. For Gastonia residents only.

Are you facing eviction or utility disconnection (electricity, gas, water or oil)? We may be able to help.

Rent
If you have been living at your residence for at least 60 days and you are facing an eviction or have been padlocked out of your residence, we may be able to help you with a portion of your rent. To receive help, you must be late (after the 5th of the month) and have received notification from your landlord.  Individuals seeking assistance with rent are typically given an appointment.  Appointments are scheduled Monday through Thursday between 8:00 a.m - 12:00 p.m. and are scheduled on a first come, first served basis based on availability.  Individuals with a writ of possession from the Mecklenburg County Sheriff's office or who have been padlocked out of their residence with documentation indicating imminent eviction are typically seen as a walk-in on that day.

Our mortgage assistance is provided for people facing foreclosure through our Credit Counseling partners. If you need help paying your mortgage, please contact  Consumer Credit Counseling program at United Family Services.

Utilities
If you have been living at your current residence for at least 60 days and your utilities are scheduled to be turned off or they have already been disconnected, we may be able to assist you with a portion of your utility payment.

How to apply for help
Crisis Assistance Ministry operates as a Financial Emergency Room, screening individuals each morning for interviews based upon the severity of their emergencies. Our hours are Monday-Friday from 8 am to 5 pm. However, an arrival time of 7:45 am is required.

Because people are seen according to the nature of their emergencies, it is difficult to know how long you can expect to wait. We recommend that you come to the agency when you receive court papers (for rent) or closer to your disconnect date (for utilities). Due to the high number of people seeking assistance, we generally are only able to meet with people who are going to have a utility turned off on that day or possibly the following day.

What to bring

The following are a list of items required for an interview:

Picture ID for the applying client
Social Security documentation for all household members ; if you are not registered with social security, you must provide some form of identification.  * Social Security documentation includes a social security card, documentation from the Social Security Administration verifying social security number , W2 form from an employer or paystub indicating the nine digit social security number.
Proof of all household income for the past 30 days. Clients who are paid every week are required to present four current paystubs. Clients who are paid bi-weekly are required to present two current paystubs, and clients who are paid monthly are required to bring one current paystub. Clients who receive unemployment, SSI or SSA, VA Pension, Retirement Pension, Child Support, Disability, and/or income from family or friends are required to present a statement of income verification. Clients who are self employed are required to present income verification.
All disconnection and past due utility statements. These should be in the applying clients name and the person must reside in the household.
    Rental lease

How you qualify for assistance

We place no limit on the number of visits for emergency financial assistance; however, there are limits to the amount of aid per family per year.
A person may be turned away from the agency for lack of proper documentation. If this happens to you, we will explain the reason so that you will know the best way to get help.
If you do not live in Mecklenburg County, please contact your local Department of Social Services or your local United Way.

Tips For Prompt And Professional Assistance
1. Make an appointment - Always attempt to make an appointment. Oftentimes this will save you hours waiting in lines. When on the phone make sure you ask for the documentation needed in order to receive assistance.

2. Do not be late for your appointment - This tip should speak for itself.

3. Dress appropriately - If you want to be treated with respect, dress as appropriately as possible. We are not saying wear a suit. Just make sure you and your clothes are clean and non offensive. We have found that clients who dress in this manner have a better chance of receiving aid.

4. Bring all pre determined documentation - Bring all of the documents you were advised to bring from your appointment phone call. Without them, you will not receive aid.
